A walk on the wild side

The Pine Plains Free Library introduced local children to some ambassadors from the animal kingdom with Animal Embassy at the Lions Club Pavilion on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Led by Animal Embassy Education Specialist Kevin Rockwell, the program offered everything from a duck named Shamu to a uromastyx lizard named Nigel. Rockwell taught the children about animal behaviors, diets and defense mechanisms, often calling volunteers to help him with his demonstrations. Above, Rockwell showed children how Nigel defends himself from predators.
