Budget vote, town meeting May 13

SHARON — The annual town meeting will be held at Town Hall on Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m. Taxpayers will vote on the proposed education and municipal spending plans for fiscal year of 2011-12, which begins July 1. The proposed municipal budget is $3,567,700. The total education budget, including Sharon’s portion of the Region One budget, is a total of $6,274,426. The municipal budget is available for the public to see at Town Hall. The education budget can be found at Sharon Center School. In addition to the budget vote, taxpayers will also vote on the expenditure of funds, including Town Aid Road funds for bridge and road repair; up to $130,000 from the equipment/replacement fund for highway equipment; up to $7,900 from the Sharon Cemetery Fund; funds from state, federal and local grants for educational purposes and any other funds or grants for general use in the town. And taxpayers will vote on whether or not to adopt the proposed five-year capital improvement plan, copies of which can be found at Town Hall. The last two items on the agenda are the acceptance of an easement from Michele Jawin, which will allow for the construction and maintenance of a turnaround on Kirk Road; and the expenditure of $15,173.59 toward the design of the new transfer station. The funding for the transfer station will come from Sharon’s portion of the reimbursement from the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority tipping fees and any interest accrued.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
