Finding happiness in spite of it all

SALISBURY — In 2015, John Leland set out to write a series of stories for The New York Times about Americans aged 85 years and up.

What he found surprised him.

Leland spoke at Noble Horizons on Saturday, July 14, about the book that emerged from the newspaper series, “Happiness is a Choice You Make: Lessons from a Year Among the Oldest Old.”

He began with this: “To get the weekend started right I’m going to talk about getting old and dying.”

The audience, most of them elderly, laughed.
