Eileen M. Strauss

AMENIA — Eileen M. Strauss, 79, a lifelong resident of Amenia, died peacefully at her home on March 29, 2011.Born Jan. 27, 1932, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Culligan) and John McEnroe. Eileen graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Amenia and attended Krissler Business School in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Beauty Culture in Amenia. Mrs. Strauss was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. On Aug. 16, 1952, she married Guenther Strauss in Amenia. Mr. Strauss died Nov. 21, 1999. Mrs. Strauss was the chef and co-owner of the Delavergne Farms Inn in Amenia for many years. She then worked at the Wassaic Developmental Center as a therapy aide until her retirement in 1985. She also was a hairdresser at various salons in the Amenia area. She is survived by her two sons, Shane Strauss and his wife, Donna, of Standfordville and Darryl Strauss of Amenia; two brothers, T. Paul McEnroe of Middletown, R.I., and Robert McEnroe of Painted Post, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Shana, Sayre and Tyler Strauss; one great-grandson, Lucan Strauss; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, John “Jack” McEnroe of Amenia and Alfred “Al” McEnroe of Dover Plains.A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 1 at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial followed at Amenia Island Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
