Local daycare raising money for March for Babies

AMENIA — My Little Angels Daycare is preparing for a big May fundraiser, as nearly a dozen walkers will participate in this year’s March for Babies benefit in Hyde Park on May 1 as part of the local business’ team. Daycare owner Denise Clair said she was approached by one of her Angels’ mothers, Amanda Moore, who has participated in the walk before.Millions of people participate in the walkathon every year at more than 1,000 separate events across the country, according to the March of Dimes’ website, the charitable organization that raises money to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality.Clair said that team T-shirts will be printed with “My Little Angels” on them for participants. There will be at least 10 walkers, and the funds are continuing to roll in. An early goal of $500 has already been reached, and the group will hold a bake sale at Freshtown in Amenia on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get the word out.“What better cause?” Clair said. “Rain or shine, we’re looking forward to getting out there and trying to raise some money.”Anybody looking for more information or to donate may go to the team’s website, within the March For Babies website, at www.marchforbabies.org, where donations can be made. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
