Catholic church to bring back dinner dance fundraiser

AMENIA — The Immaculate Conception Saint Patrick Parish in Amenia will hold a Spring Celebration on Saturday, April 30, that will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction. It will be one of the first major fundraising events under the leadership of Father Kent Wilson, who came to Immaculate Conception in 2009 from a parish in Fishkill.“For the Catholic church, most of its funding comes from each week’s collections,” Wilson said. Fundraisers like the dinner and auction are held to raise anything that collections aren’t covering, he added. The silent auction will include donated items from local businesses and private parishioners, and a separate raffle ticket drawing will be held for a 40-inch Samsung LCD television, which the church was able to obtain at a discount from Amenia’s Sears Hometown Store. The event will be held in the church’s Parish Center gymnasium, and dinner will be served by Bobby Boyles with help from Pete Sinclair. Music will be provided by Jim Devine.Amenia’s Immaculate Conception has a congregation of about 300, with between 220 and 250 parishioners attending services every week. Wilson said that this event, which the church began planning for last fall, will be one its biggest fundraisers of the year.Tickets to the event, which will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on April 30, will run $20 each (tickets must be purchased ahead of time). Raffle tickets for the television will be available in advance for $5 each or five for $20; the drawing will be held at 8 p.m. at the dinner. The Immaculate Conception Parish Center is located on 4 Lavelle Road in Amenia. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
