Kathryn Joan (Sandmeyer) Waller

CORNWALL — Kathryn Joan (Sandmeyer) Waller passed away peacefully on March 26, 2011, at Emeritus Assisted Living in Torrington. She was the widow of John J. Waller.Kathryn, known as “Kaye,” was born June 5, 1918, in Cornwall, the daughter of the late Lillian “Cora” Dibble and Charles Sandmeyer.She spent her early years at the family home on Popple Swamp Road in Cornwall. Kaye was the third of five siblings, having an older sister and brother, Pauline and Ralph, and also two younger sisters, Dorothy and Barbara. As a young girl, Kaye remembers her fondness for her parents and siblings. She enjoyed spending time with her brother and sisters and helping her mother around the home. She graduated from the West Haven High School in 1936. Having a love for learning she continued her studies attending the New Haven Teachers College, now known as Southern Connecticut State University. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education, she began her teaching career in the Goshen school system and later taught in the Wilton school system from 1948 until her retirement in 1983. She married John J. Waller, whom she had met while he was employed by the RW Sandmeyer Co., on July 17, 1955. They shared more than 47 happy years of marriage together, vacationing and traveling to places such as Bermuda, on their honeymoon, Alaska and Mississippi. They were very active in the Lutheran Church and also enjoyed the outdoors wholeheartedly. Kaye took pride in caring for her home and had many hobbies and interests. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, golfing, bird-watching, trips to the ocean and creating beautiful works of art through needlepoint and sewing. The couple’s love for the outdoors could not be contained, and soon after retirement they moved to Lakewood, N. J., where they were able to spend many sunny days at the beach together enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.She is survived by her sister, Barbara Osolin of Kent; and a niece and several nephews. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Pauline Cudlipp and Dorothy Budnick; and a brother Ralph W. Sandmeyer. A service will be held later in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Torrington Hospice Team, 65 Commercial Blvd., Torrington, CT 06790.The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
