A Surprise grant for dance program

AMENIA — After being denied a grant for next year’s free dance program for elementary school students, the town of Amenia got some surprise news when a follow-up letter from the Community Foundation of Dutchess County announced it had been awarded $1,400 for the program from an alternative donor fund.

Neville Smythe, the organization’s president of programs, said that the original fund the town had applied for, the Ann and Abe Effron Donor Advised Fund, was very competitive this year and unfortunately there was no money available for the town’s dance program.

It wasn’t a reconsideration by the foundation’s board, Smythe clarified, but simply another financial avenue that can assist the town’s program in 2011.

“We had funded that program before, I think two years ago, he said. “We went to see the final recital and thought it was terrific. June Kaufman [the program’s instructor] does a nice job with the kids, and we were glad to be able to find the funding for it again.

“I’ve never seen a grant get turned down and then find funding again, Councilwoman Vicki Doyle said at the board’s Jan. 5 meeting. “The money’s really going to help this year.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
