Simmons scholarship awarded

WEBUTUCK — The Trustees of the Violet H. Simmons Scholarship Fund (VHFFS) and The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation have announced the winner of the 2010-11 Music Scholarship, which is available to a current Webutuck High School student.

Marilyn Unger, VHSSF trustee, presented the award to Alexandra Coffin at the Webutuck High School holiday concert on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Already an accomplished clarinetist, Coffin will use the award for private saxophone lessons with a goal to be able to participate in jazz ensembles.

Through the vision and support of Dan and Nancy Brown of Amenia, VHSSF has been able to add another opportunity for Webutuck students  to further develop their talent and interest in music while they are still in high school. This adds another dimension to help fulfill Miss Simmons’ legacy of excellence.

In 1981, when Simmons retired from a 48-year teaching career in the Webutuck School District, former students, colleagues and members of the community established the Violet H. Simmons Scholarship honoring academic excellence and potential. This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more outstanding members of the graduating class to help them defray the costs of four years of college.

Thanks to the generosity of Barbara Thorlichen Riefle, a Webutuck graduate, the program was expanded to establish a summer enrichment scholarship, which helps students in their second or third year of college explore a program they would otherwise not be able to experience. Each applicant presents a proposal to the trustees explaining how their travel, internship, study or community service will enrich their lives and prove of ultimate benefit to society.

The Violet Simmons Scholarship Funds are managed by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, a not-for-profit organization located in Sheffield, Mass., that serves as a catalyst for philanthropy in the Tri-state area.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
