Dorothy Selfridge

WASSAIC — Dorothy Selfridge, 97, a lifelong resident of Wassaic, died Dec. 30, 2010, at Sharon Health Care Center.

She was born Oct. 18, 1913, in Washington, N.Y., the daughter of the late Elsie and Homer Duncan.

On April 9, 1932, at the South Amenia Presbyterian Church, she married Henry J. Selfridge Sr., who died in 1968.  She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amenia.

For more than 20 years, Dorothy and her husband owned and operated Dot’s Diner in Wassaic. Later, for almost another 20 years, Dorothy worked at the Cozy Corner Restaurant in Amenia. She was also a food service worker at the Wassaic developmental center before retiring in 1996.    

Dorothy is survived by a son, Henry J. Selfridge Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Doris Selfridge Smith of South Amenia; a brother, Harold Duncan of Amenia; three sisters, Lillian Nickerson of Wingdale, Jean Bassi of Wingdale and Shirley Taylor of South Daytona, Fla.;  10 grandchildren, Timothy Selfridge, Stephen Selfridge, Julie Arndt, Cindy Fink, Pamela Lyle, Sue Caruso, Amy Fernandez, Lauri Andrews, Jennifer Langley and Stacia Dubis; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara L. Honour; a son, Allan Selfridge; and two brothers, Charles and Percy Duncan.

Funeral services were held Jan. 5 at the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains, the Rev. Eileen Epperson officiating. Burial followed at Valley View Cemetery in Dover Plains.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
