Hearing Dec. 15 on draft regulation for wind turbines in North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — A draft of proposed zoning regulations for wind turbines will be reviewed at the Dec. 15 Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) meeting, set for 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

In a Dec. 6 workshop, P&Z members stated that the regulations are far from their final form. Representatives of BNE Energy Inc. recently denied an application for a turbine at Lone Oak Camp Sites because of the lack of regulations. BNE representatives were on hand  for Monday’s meeting. Company Chairman Paul Corey told the commissioners that several major aspects of the draft regulations would each be a project killer, for this and almost any other commercial turbine.

Commissioners cited their lack of expertise. The draft is drawn from regulations in place in towns in numerous states. P&Z will take input Dec. 15 from BNE and the public.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
