Millbrook lights up for the holidays

MILLBROOK — The Christmas trees along Franklin Avenue were brightly lit, the menorah in front of the Thorne Building glowed one candle brighter every evening last week, and on Friday evening, Dec. 3, Warren McMillan, recreation director of the town of Washington, pulled the switch to officially begin the holiday season in the village of Millbrook.

Onlookers cheered and families took photographs by the Christmas tree, the Nativity and Santa Claus displays. Some hopped on the tractor-pulled hay wagons for a tour of the village streets and others went directly to the firehouse to line up for Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Children waited patiently to see both of the Clauses, whisper their Christmas wishes and receive their gift of a Christmas book. Santa’s elves, eighth-graders at Millbrook Middle School, Travis Wiltse and Corey Orlik, were on hand doing community service for the National Junior Honor Society. The elves were taking photographs of children sitting on Santa’s lap as he said to the children, “My,  you’ve grown a lot since last year.â€

The Women’s Auxiliary provided donuts and cider to everyone. Volunteer firemen were on hand to direct traffic. The festivities were cosponsored by the Millbrook-Town of Washington Business Association and the Washington Recreation Program, and funded in part by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services through the Dutchess County Youth Bureau.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
