Gilbert boys basketball team ready for the season

WINSTED  â€” The Gilbert School varsity boys basketball team will begin its season with an away game on Friday, Dec. 17, at Shepaug Valley at 7 p.m.

They will play their first home game Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. against Terryville.

Last year’s team did not do too well, tying with three other teams for last place in their division in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference with eight wins and 12 losses.

They were beaten during the first round of their playoff game in March by Canton with a score of 71-52.

Despite this, head coach Mark Douglas said he is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“The team played all summer in a league in Torrington, Douglas said. “We also played in a league in the fall where we held our own. To win, it’s going to take focus and hard work. We need to realize that our work ethic in practice will translate into wins. The team has to practice hard and play hard, and we can’t be afraid to challenge ourselves.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
