75 years ago — 1935

SALISBURY — Mr. John Visini is moving a boiler from the Lime Rock Milk station to the new factory of the Salisbury Handle Co. The boiler weighs about 20 ton.

SHARON — The Prindle cottage has been rented by Clifford DeGraw.

TACONIC — Harold Smith had the misfortune to cut his hand quite severely while at play on Saturday requiring several stitches to close it.

50 years ago — 1960

Tractors and heavy cranes lumbered up steep Mount Riga this week to begin work on restoring the old Colonial Furnace as an historical monument.

LAKEVILLE — Miss Mary Stanton retired from her position as a clerk in the Lakeville Post Office Wednesday after serving 41 years and 8 months.

FALLS VILLAGE — A circulating library has been put in operation in the school this past week. Librarians are Kathy Canfield and Carol Atwood, both of Grade 7. The library cart is well stocked with books for each level of age and interest and is brought to each room by the librarians at intervals during the week.

25 years ago — 1985

A new car has been provided by a Canaan dealer to help raise funds for renovations to the Mount Everett Regional School building. Brewer Brothers Chrysler-Plymouth will supply a 1986 Chrysler LeBaron GTS Turbo which will be awarded New Year’s Day. Tickets are $10 each and limited to 2,500. Proceeds will be used to renovate and improve the Mount Everett buildings and grounds.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
