Every division is up for grabs

Last week: 11-5; for season week: 95-65

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season: 8-3

That was a decent week, and once again my Pick of the Week, the Saints, covered nicely.

Talk about parity: Every division in the NFL is still up for grabs. Every race has at least two teams running neck and neck, and in some cases there are three or even four teams still in the hunt for a division crown. In addition, by the end of the season you’ll have those teams who don’t win their respective division races fighting it out for the Wild Card entries.

There will be no shortage of important games as the regular season begins to wind down. Here are my picks for this week and here’s hoping that everyone enjoyed a safe and bountiful Thanksgiving.

Thursday, Nov. 25

New England at Detroit — I would like to see the Lions win some more games, but the Patriots cannot afford to lose this game. I’ll stick with the Pats, 30-20

New Orleans at Dallas — The Cowboys are definitely playing better, but so are the Saints.  The return of Reggie Bush will make  the difference in this game, so I’ll take the Saints, 33-27.

Cincinnati at N.Y. Jets — The Bengals are taking their annual nosedive, so I’ll stick with the Jets, 23-17. (Watch out for this game.)

Sunday, Nov. 28

Green Bay at Atlanta — This is one of the best games on the card, and both teams are playing well. I think the difference in this game will be defense, and I think the Packers are the better defensive team. I’ll take Green Bay, 23-20.

Tampa Bay at Baltimore — Another good matchup in this game. The Raven defense is always tough, while the Bucs offense lacks consistency. With that said, I’ll stick with my least favorite team. Ravens win, 23-16.

Pittsburgh at Buffalo — The Bills have won two in a row, but much like New England, the Steelers can’t afford an upset I’ll stick with the Steelers, 28-19.

Carolina at Cleveland — The Panthers are going down the tube, while the Browns continue to play tough despite their record. I like the Browns in this game as my Pick of the Week, 23-17.

Tennessee at Houston — The Titans are floundering and so are the Texans. Normally I would like the Titan defense, but Houston managed to put up 27 points against the Jet defense, so I think they’ll be able to handle the Titans. I’ll stick with Houston, 30-24.

Jacksonville at N.Y. Giants — This is a must game for the Giants who must stop shooting themselves in the foot with turnovers. The Jags will play hard, but in the end the Giants prevail, 28-20.

Minnesota at Washington — The Vikings need to rid themselves of head coach Brad Childress and QB Brett Favre. It’s obvious that the bulk of the team has given up on both of them. The Skins are tough and should win this one, 20-16.

Kansas City at Seattle — Both of these teams are in first place but are anything but powerhouses. I’m going with my heart in this one. I’ll stick with the Chiefs, 24-20.

Miami at Oakland — The Dolphins are no pushovers, but their playoff hopes are slipping away. The Raiders didn’t show much on the road against Steelers but should fare better at home. On the other hand, the Dolphins are 4-1 on the road and that makes this game a toss-up. I flipped a coin and it came up Raiders, 23-20.

Philadelphia at Chicago — I’m still not impressed with the Bears but they are always tough team to play. The Eagles can score on anybody and that includes the solid Bear defense. I’ll stick with Vick and the Eagles, 26-17.

St. Louis at Denver — The Broncos are going nowhere, while the upstart Rams at least have a budding star in QB Sam Bradford. The Broncos are usually tough at home, but I’m sticking with St. Louis, 24-19.

San Diego at Indianapolis — The Chargers are making the usual mid-season push behind the super play of QB Philip Rivers. The Colts lost a tough one in New England, and I think will rebound at home and win, 24-23.

Monday, Nov. 29

San Francisco at Arizona — These are two of just a handful of teams that really don’t figure in the playoff picture at this point in time. I keep pulling for the Niners, but they just can’t score enough to win. I’ll take a shop with the Cards 24-19.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
