Mary L. Podris

ANCRAMDALE — Mary L. Podris, 92, passed away on Nov. 18, 2010, at Sharon Hospital.

She was born on March 3, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Bertha (Wolf) and Morris Lubow.

She was the widow of Robert B. Podris, whom she married on Nov. 10, 1940, in Brooklyn. He predeceased her in 1982.

She and her husband were co-owners and operators of the Crest Lane Dairy Farm in Ancramdale.

Later, she was the bookkeeper for the Harlem Valley Times newspaper in Amenia.

Mrs. Podris was an avid bridge and poker player. She was also an instructor of the canasta card game at the Community Center in Pine Plains.

She loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Taylor and her husband, Bob, of Ancramdale; a son, Bob Podris and his wife, Betty, of Ancramdale; five grandchildren, Jason Podris and his wife, Catherine, of Galway, Ireland, David Podris of Saratoga, N.Y., Jeremy Taylor of Wilton, N.Y., Josh Taylor and his wife, Sofia, of Alexandria, Va., and Scott Taylor and his wife, Helen Lau, of New York, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Ella Mary Podris, Hannah Podris, Eli Taylor and Evie Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Irving Lubow, and his wife, Naomi.

Graveside services were held Nov. 22  at the Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 95 Schwenk Drive, Kingston, NY 12401, or the American Lung Ass., 155 Washington Ave., Suite 210, Albany, NY 12210.

Arrangements are under the care of the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
