Lost, Then Found

Only a couple of hundred years late, the American premiére of an important work by Jan Dismas Zelenka will be presented by Crescendo next week under the direction of Christine Gevert.

Written in gratitude for the composer’s recovery from a serious illness, the Missa Votiva is seen by some as a masterpiece. Though Zelenka, born near Prague, was a contemporary of Bach, who held him in high esteem, Zelenka’s work was largely unknown until just a few decades ago, when the German oboist Heinz Holliger began a revival.

Composed at a time when music could be easily played without much rehearsal, Zelenka’s works are nonetheless often quite difficult. Word of this neglected composer began to leak out to scholars in recent decades, and performances and recordings have followed. But this setting of the mass, dating from 1739, has remained unheard in concert here until now. The program will include a later concerto for 2 oboes, bassoon, two violins, viola and basso continuo.

The Missa Votiva will be performed Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 251 Main St. in Great Barrington, MA, and again Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. at Trinity Church, 484 Lime Rock Road, in Lakeville, CT.

Guest soloists are Julianne Baird, Martin Near, Steven Fasano and Ron M’Sadoques, with orchestral accompaniment on period instruments. Gevert will give a preconcert talk 30 minutes before the performance. Tickets: $30 adult/ $10 under 18 available through www.worldclassmusic.org. Tri-State Chamber Members and NWCT Arts Council Culture Card members can buy one ticket and get a second one at half price.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
