Night of a Thousand Pies

KENT — The fifth annual Night of a Thousand Pies will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Andrew’s parish hall.

The sweet sale is a benefit for Kent Affordable Housing, which is undertaking the conversion of a circa-1828 former farmhouse on Maple Street into affordable apartments.

The property is known as the Millard Stuart house. The 15-room building has enough space for five affordable units, which could be configured as two one-bedroom apartments, one three-bedroom apartment and one two-bedroom apartment.

At their regular meeting earlier this month, the selectmen formally granted a 10-year partial tax abatement to Kent Affordable Housing for the units.

At the meeting, Affordable Housing President Virginia Suttman said the organization wants to raise $1 million for the project.

Of course it will take more than a thousand pies to reach that goal. But the popular annual pie sale is certainly a fun way to, well, take a bite out of the total.

The sale will start at the parish hall at noon and continue until 2:30 p.m. Pies and tarts of all flavors will be for sale, donated by restaurants and home and professional bakers.

There will be pies of all shapes and sizes, including fruit, meat, pocket, pizza, spinach, moon and pigeon pies, as well as quiches and strudels.

A full lunch with savory pie, soup or salad, a beverage and dessert pie will be available for $12 to $16. Slices of pie will be sold for $5.

Beginning at 7 p.m., there will be a dinner with appetizers, entrees, wine and dessert pie. The dinner costs $75 per person. Advance reservations for the dinner must be made by Friday, Oct. 29.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
