Ethics Committee submits draft code for review

AMENIA — Amenia’s Ethics Committee submitted a draft Code of Ethics for the town at the Oct. 14 Town Board meeting.

Committee Chair George Mudge explained during a brief presentation that the town’s code has not been updated since 1991.

“It’s generally accepted that it needs revision. It’s out of date, he said.

The committee has been planning for several years to undertake an overhaul of the code, which up until fairly recently was a daunting task, seeing that there was previously no general blueprint to start from.

But this past March, Mudge explained, the state comptroller’s office did just that, releasing a model Code of Ethics for towns to use as a jumping-off point for revising their own documents. The committee worked with Attorney to the Town Michael Hayes on modifications to the draft, which Mudge said were slight.

It’s ultimately up to the board to accept the draft as is or to modify it before voting on adoption. A public hearing would have to be scheduled prior to adoption, and Supervisor Wayne Euvrard said the board would begin its review process of the document.

“We were lucky on both counts to have Mr. Hayes’ assistance as well as a model from the comptroller’s office, Mudge said. “The committee gives a very enthusiastic and unanimous recommendation to the board on the draft.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
