Webutuck JV field hockey picks up win

WEBUTUCK — The girls on Webutuck High School’s junior varsity field hockey team have been looking forward to a varsity season for three years.

They came a little closer to making that a reality last Wednesday, Oct. 13, picking up two goals en route to a win over Stissing Mountain Middle/High School’s junior varsity team, 2-0.

The game was also a special one in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Webutuck wore pink T-shirts instead of their regular jerseys, and similarly-colored flourishes could be spotted on cleats, balls and sticks.

Scoring for Webutuck were Alyssa Knapp, assisted by Sam Murphy, and K.T. Thompson, assisted by Jane Markonic. Both goals were in the second half and lifted the Warriors up over Stissing Mountain 2-0 for the win.

Webutuck improves to 8-2, and having spent the last three years playing as a junior varsity team, coach Kathleen Howard said the team should be ready to give Webutuck a varsity-level team for fall 2011.

“They’ve been improving tremendously, she said. “They’re ready to go to the next level.

The Bombers, coached by Debbie Beam, fell to a 3-7-2 record. Player injuries, as well as several athletes moving up to the Stissing Mountain varsity team, have proved a challenge for her team this year, Beam said, but she still noted positive improvements during the season.

“Against Webutuck we managed to dominate the first half but clearly felt tired in the second, she said. “Maxine Roberts and Mallory Mirto did well in the midfield, feeding passes to the offense, and Klaudyna Grazekowski worked the ball well on the field. The team has had a lot of fun this year and are prepared for anything the game may bring after this season.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
