Fire company needs funds for pumper

NORTH CANAAN — A pumper being built for the Canaan Fire Company (CFC) is on schedule to be delivered in mid-November. In order to pay for it, voters will be asked at a town meeting to authorize the use of town funds that have already been set aside for the purchase. A date has not been set for the meeting yet.

At a town meeting in May, voters approved a plan to appropriate $200,000 in accumulated funds from a capital account toward the $488,000 purchase. The town currently sets aside $75,000 annually toward a 10-year new truck cycle.

The remainder is raised by CFC volunteers through a variety of events and funding appeals.

CFC officers appeared at the Board of Finance Oct. 13 meeting to request additional funds from the capital account. There is currently a $171,216 balance earmarked for a firetruck. Finance board members unanimously approved recommending the new appropriation. The Board of Selectmen will set the town meeting date.

A final payment for the Spartan pumper, currently under construction at Gowans-Knight Co. Inc in Watertown, is $237,872.

CFC has about $50,000 available in its new equipment fund. The public has been supportive during fundraisers, but there is currently a shortfall.

To that end, some local businesses have been approached for donations. They have been a primary source in the past, but CFC hoped to give them a break this year. The fire company might have to take out a short-term loan.

Progress on the firetruck is posted online at a photo gallery at gowansknight.com and at canaanfirecompany.org, where online donations can be made. Checks made payable to Canaan Fire Company may be sent to 4 East Main St., North Canaan CT 06018.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
