Northwestern engages in Chinese exchange

WINSTED — This week Northwestern Regional High School hosted a very special group of visiting students, teachers and administrators from its sister school in Shandong Province, China.

Northwestern has established and has been continuously building a quality Chinese language program for its students over the past five years. The program has grown, allowing a very close relationship with students at the sister school to develop.

“We’ve been building up this unique and special Chinese language program now for several years, said Principal Ken Chichester. “We started five years ago having a couple of teachers visiting from China and have since added Chinese as a full-time language program, and we have had our Chinese students start regularly corresponding with our sister school in Shandong Province virtually.

Northwestern has hosted many foreign exchange students over the past several years, from a variety of different countries, continuously expanding and hosting more international students as the program builds.

“We’ve always welcomed several foreign exchange students each year from many different countries, and every time we host a student from a new country we hang their country’s flag in our main entrance way, and we’ve collected quite a few flags over the years, said House 1 Housemaster Claudia Mossman. “Currently we have a high school boy from Germany visiting us for the year who’s playing on the GN football team.

This year, however, Northwestern is taking it further by hosting a delegation of 18 students, two teachers and one administrator from the sister school in Shandong, China. The group will arrive Sept. 27 and will stay with host families.

“They will be attending school here to meet our students, especially the ones they’ve been getting to know virtually over the last couple of years, said Chichester.

Trips are planned to New London, Barkhamsted School and the Pequot Museums, among other places.

“We’re still working on planning the final details for their stay here, ensuring we give them the best experience we can, the principal said.

Northwestern is still seeking host families for five of the visiting students. Any family who may be interested is encouraged to contact Chichester for more information.

“We are really looking forward to having such a large group visiting at once, he said. “This is truly going to be a special experience for all involved. Also in April a group from our school will be traveling to China for a week and stay with host families there and visit their school.

The group from Northwestern who travels to China in April will be comprised of students, a couple of teachers and administrators. For more information on hosting a visiting Chinese student for the week, contact Chichester at 860-379-8525.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
