Vernon H. Dunbar

WINSTED — Vernon H. “Bucky†Dunbar, 92, of Willow Street, died Sept. 19, 2010, at Valerie Manor Convalescent Home in Torrington, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Gladys (Davey) Dunbar.

Born in Winsted July 28, 1918, he was the son of the late Lila (Hayes) and Harry Dunbar and had lived most of his life in Winsted. Prior to his retirement, he had worked for Emory World Wide for 24 years, retiring as manager of customer service. He was a graduate of The Gilbert School, class of 1939, where he was an outstanding baseball player. He went on to attend Bay Path College on a baseball scholarship and graduated in 1941.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941, saw action in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome and Arno, and was discharged in 1945. He was a former member of the Masons, the Winsted Elks, the Winsted Fire Department and the Colebrook Gin & Chowder Club. He was a former tax assessor for the town of Colebrook, had served on the Inland Wetlands Commission and was also on the regional landfill board for the town of Colebrook.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by two sons, Norman “Ned†Dunbar of Winsted and Robert Hayes Dunbar Sr. of Eureka Springs, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Sept. 24, 11:30 a.m., at Forest View Cemetery, Winsted, with the Rev. Alice Murphy officiating.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
