Expansion plan for Eden Hill gets OK from P&Z

NORTH CANAAN — An application for a special permit to expand Eden Hill (a substance-abuse recovery facility for women) was quickly approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission Sept. 15.

The public hearing was extended from the August meeting, but there was no additional comment from the public at last week’s meeting.

The facility is operated by Dori Gay, in her former residence on Route 44 at the corner of Trescott Hill.

It has six bedrooms and six bathrooms and currently accommodates five clients and a live-in staff member, as allowed by federal law.

Gay sought to expand to 10 clients. In reality, there will probably be no more than eight at any given time, she said, with the exception of brief overlaps as clients come and go.

The women come from treatment centers and are required to stay for at least 60 days as they prepare to re-enter their lives — or to start over.

Anna McGuire, a friend of Gay’s who is assisting with the application, presented a revised operational plan for the facility. She noted it was inspected by the fire marshal, and will be inspected annually.

Other business

A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Town Hall, prior to the regular monthly meeting, to consider changes to regulations regarding accessory apartments.

Two separate sections dealing with the zoning matter are listed in regulations. An amendment will be devised to correct the matter.

Left out of Richard Haass’s Forum talk

I recently attended the Salisbury Forum’s lecture to hear Richard Haass on his new book “The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens.” While I agree with his 10 obligations, believe our country would be a better place if more of us adopted these habits, I was dismayed by his failure to follow his own advice. Mr. Haass, a career State Department employee, spent the first half of his talk on the state of the world and U.S.’s role in it. He mentioned climate change, foreign policy, the upcoming presidential election, a possible Trump second administration, the Ukraine War, Taiwan and the situation in Gaza. He had an attentive audience and confidently gave his opinions on what sounded like a State Department briefing.
