At ag fair, fruits (and veggies) of a spectacular summer

The Cornwall Farmers Market moved to the Green for the annual agricultural fair, held on Sept. 11. Tables were laden with farm-fresh food, jams, jellies, relishes and baked goods of all shapes and sizes — including  miniature cupcakes from the new Barrington Bites in Great Barrington.

The entries in the judged exhibition included a horned melon grown by Iris Hermann  and Chinese oranges grown by the Prud’hommes.

There were categories for produce, herbs, field and seed crops, dairy, home preserves, canned goods, baked goods, honey, maple syrup, needlecrafts, flowers and children’s crafts and hobbies — all judged in divisions for adults and kids.

Club K at the Cornwall Child Center made the winning pie in the apple pie contest, and earned blue ribbons from the judges and as the People’s Choice winner.

This was a great year for tomatoes, but Michael Tesoro’s beefy organic beefsteak tomatoes were still astonishingly large and blemish-free.

As always, the table laden with jams, jellies and relishes was a particular draw. They were put  up by members of All Saints Episcopal Chapel.

Throughout the day, youngsters were drawn like bees to honey toward the towering stack of hay bales.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
