Flames from propane tank kiss the sky

SHARON — Parents waiting for the late bus from Housatonic Valley Regional High School on Thursday, Sept. 9, gathered  in the parking lot at the shopping plaza. But instead of watching the road to see when the bus would arrive, all eyes were fixed on a jet of flame that shot up out of a pipe and into the air.

The controlled blaze was managed by workmen from Taylor Propane. The area around the pipe was closed off and patrolled by volunteers with the Sharon Fire Department.

Dee Dee Donovan, an owner of the shopping plaza, said in a phone interview that one of the propane tanks (the one in the grassy island in the center of the parking lot) had been damaged. The gas had to be emptied from the tank and was set on fire.

Taylor Propane said that nothing happened at the plaza.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
