Morris Paley

SHARON — Morris Paley, of Sharon, died peacefully at his home on Sept. 8, 2010. Quick with a story and even faster with a smile, he leaves behind many friends in the Sharon community. An enlightened inspiration to his progeny and to simple acquaintances alike, he will be missed dearly by all who were fortunate enough to spend time with him.

Morris was born at Sharon Hospital on Jan. 18, 1922, after his mother was brought there in a horse-drawn sleigh. They lived in Cornwall, and later moved to a farm in Amenia, where Morris attended school.

Around 1940, Morris’ father purchased a farm in Sharon where Morris lived until his death.

After voluntarily enlisting in the Air Force in 1942, Morris was honorably discharged from the service after his father became ill; he returned home so he could run the farm.

He married his soulmate, Emma “Dolly Carberry, on July 24, 1948.

Morris and Dolly raised eight children on the family farm. After his farming career, Morris became very involved in the antique car community, traveling far and wide to attend shows and swap meets to display his car collection.

Morris was preceded in death by his sister, May Paley Benson, and his son, Douglas Paley.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his sisters, Gladys (Paley) Baker and Lila (Paley) Zlotoff; his children George and Judy Paley, William and Elaine Paley, Susan and David Kent, Roberta and Thomas Scott, Elizabeth and David Tong, Charlie Paley and Marge Demarrais and Sarah and Chris Coon;  and 12 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Morris’ name to the Sharon Fire Department, PO 357, Sharon CT 06069.

Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home. Calling hours Sept. 10 were followed by a Masonic service. A memorial service was held at St. Bernard’s Church on Sept. 13 and was followed by a celebration of Morris’ life at the Grove in Lakeville.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
