A few new faces in a generally quiet election year

In the Nov. 7 municipal elections, two first selectmen who retired this year were elected to the Region One Board of Education: Pat Mechare of Canaan/Falls Village and Doug Humes of North Canaan.

Falls Village (the town of Canaan) has a new first selectman, Republican Henry Todd, who defeated Democrat Joel Jones. Jones had enough votes to qualify for a seat on the board, but chose not to accept it. David Barger, a Democrat, joins GOP incumbent Selectman Greg Marlowe on the  board.

In North Canaan, Republican Charlie Perotti defeated Democrat Susie Clayton for first selectman. Republican Craig Whiting and Democrat Christian Allyn round out the board. Whiting has been a member of the Board of Finance. Allyn is a recent graduate of the University of Connecticut and possibly the youngest selectman ever elected in the town or the region.

In Salisbury, incumbent First Selectman Curtis Rand was unopposed. There was a three-way race for the two other seats on the Board of Selectmen, won by Democrat Chris Williams and Republican Don Mayland.

Voters in Winchester/Winsted chose to return the Democrats to the controlling party for the Board of Selectmen this year.

Mayor Candy Perez was re-elected along with Democratic Selectmen Steven Sedlack, Jack Bourque and Melissa Bird.

First-time Democratic candidate Linda Groppo won her seat, which gives the Democratic party a majority on the seven-person board.

Selectman Todd Arcelaschi, a Republican who ran as a petitioning candidate because he was not endorsed by the town’s Republican Committee, was re-elected to the board.

Rounding out the Board of Selectmen is former mayor Candace Bouchard.

Bouchard is the only candidate endorsed by the Republican Town Committee who won a seat on the Board of Selectmen.

It was a fairly quiet year throughout the region, with many candidates running unopposed for many seats in many towns (including selectmen seats).

Some candidates will take office right away; others will not take office until January.

The Lakeville Journal thanks all the candidates for their willingness to serve their towns. We wish the office holders all the best in their terms in office.
