Saturday is Millbrook Community Day

MILLBROOK — This Saturday, Sept. 11, Millbrook will celebrate itself at its annual community day. The Millbrook Business Association has organized the huge event this year.

The event formally begins at 9 a.m. with traditional taps and the VFW Honor Guard commemorating 9/11 in the Tribute Garden.

The event’s signature parade featuring the Millbrook Hunt Hounds will trot out on Franklin Avenue at 1:30 p.m.

The day will close at the Fireman’s Barbecue from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Millbrook firehouse with live music by Stolen Heart.

The village Green on Front Street will be the jumping off point for a historical scavenger hunt at 10 a.m., and at 2 p.m. Millbrook village historian David Greenwood will lead a walking tour of the village. Orvis Sandanona will be at the Green giving free fly-fishing instruction all day long.

Church Street will be closed to traffic for the hopscotch contest at noon.  Authors will be reading at the library, restaurants will offer food in front of their establishments, and musicians will be playing in front of Pumpkin House and Aurelia Restaurant. The Two by Two Zoo will be at the band shell and donkeys will give rides by the Thorne Building.

The former Phoenix Gallery will be filled with local businesses with everything from  antiques and clothing to kitchen cabinets. Saturday’s farmers market will begin at 9 a.m. and will have even more artisans than usual.

There will be lots of winners in a free raffle with prizes donated by participating businesses and organizations. To enter, players must have their community day passport stamped by at least eight donors. The list of prizes is long and includes free sporting clay lessons from Orvis, 12 hours of child care from Little Red Barn Child Care, restaurant dinners and even car detailing from Audia Motors. The Millerton News will be offering free advertising and a raffle.

Grace Church on upper Franklin Avenue will collect nonperishable food and supplies for the Food of Life Food Pantry.

The artist called ransome

‘Migration Collage' by ransome

Alexander Wilburn

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.
