Bombers' football season kicks off

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains Bombers are ready for a winning season.

The Stissing Mountain High School varsity football squad officially begins its season Friday, Sept. 3, with a home game against Red Hook. It’s the culmination of nearly a month of preseason training and the first opportunity for head coach Jim Jackson and his team to shake off the disappointing 1-8, 2009 season.

The team heads into the start of the 2010 season having lost 12 seniors from last year. But Jackson explained that the seven seniors who will be suiting up this year know the game.

“Those 12 seniors [last year], they didn’t have a lot of real football experience, Jackson said during a phone interview. “This year, we have seven seniors, but they all have football ability. They’ve done it since Pop Warner. Same for our junior class. There are at least 12 that have experience and have been in my program for three years.

Jackson will be joined by a new assistant coach, Mark Anderson, from Taconic Hills. Anderson will be the head JV coach as well.

Two Bombers to keep on the radar this season:

Senior Mark Kotzur, in the fullback and middle linebacker positions.

“He’s around 5 feet 10 inches, 190 pounds, Jackson said, “and last year’s defensive player. This year we’ll be looking for a little more offense from him.

Second is Caleb Capalbo, a junior running back and defensive end.

“He’s 5 feet 9 inches, 175 pounds, Jackson reported. “He’s a pretty good running back and we’ve moved him down to the defensive line to use his quickness.

The head coach said that he told his team they’ve improved enough from last year that a five- or six-win season is a realistic goal. A little support in the stands never hurts team morale either, he added.

“When I played [for Pine Plains], the whole town came out, Jackson remembered. “The one game we won last year, everybody in the stands must have gotten their cell phones out at halftime, because it was packed for the second half. So we’re hoping word does get out and that we have a good product on the field and get some more wins this year.

Fans can show off their Bomber pride at Pine Plains’ opening season game against Red Hook on Sept. 3, at 7 p.m., under the lights at the Stissing Mountain High School home field.
