Housy football team looks forward to a better 2010

FALLS VILLAGE — The 2009 season was not particularly successful for the Housatonic Valley Regional High School varsity football team, with only one win out of eight games played.

The team finished next to last  in its division, just ahead of Oliver Wolcott Tech,  which  lost every game in the season.

In fact, the only victory the Housatonic players had last year was on Sept. 19 —when they beat Wolcott Tech.

Assistant Coach Doug Richardson called 2009 “an unfortunate season,â€  but said the team is ready to make a comeback this season.

“A lot of things will work in our favor this year, Richardson said. “A lot of younger players from last year are returning and have more experience. Our morale is great.

The team’s first conditioning session was on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the high school.

During the session, Head Coach Deron Bayer had the players crawl, hop, skip and jump to prepare for the upcoming season.

“We’re all excited and can’t wait for the season to start, Bayer said. “We want our team to be the best they can be.

The first game will be away, against The Sport and Medical Sciences Academy, at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 6:30 p.m.

The first home game, which will be a rare night game at the high school, will be held on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. against Canton.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
