Leonard 'Lenny' Dudley

NORTH CANAAN — Leonard “Lenny� Dudley, 71, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on Aug. 21, 2010. He was the husband of Virginia Dudley.

Lenny was born in Calais, Maine, on Aug. 29, 1938, the son of the late Sarah (Farley) and Theodore Dudley.

Lenny relocated his family to North Canaan from the Meriden, Conn., area more than 20 years ago to live the simple life in the country. He was a jack-of-all-trades who quickly learned the skills that he used in his own lawn care business, as a caretaker at various estates and for any friend in need.

In addition to his wife, Lenny is survived by his children, April Dudley and her partner, Jessica Carfagno, Todd Dudley and his wife, Michelle, of North Canaan and Darlene Holst-Grubbe of Sharon. He was known as Papa to his grandchildren, Michael Gdovin and his wife, Maggie, of Sharon, Kevin Gdovin of Hoschton, Ga., Kenneth Dudley of Sharon, Adriana and Breanna Sutton of North Canaan and Rollie Holst-Grubbe of Sharon, and to his great-grandson, Jordan Gdovin of Sharon.

Lenny is also survived by four siblings, Irene Ashby, Merle Dudley, Kathleen Lombardi, and Robert Dudley; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Lenny’s life on Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. at his home at 75 Clayton Road in North Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Housatonic Valley Regional FFA, 246 Warren Turnpike Road, Falls Village, CT 06031.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
