Grymbling Gryphons to entertain Aug. 12 to mark 30th birthday

CORNWALL — The Grumbling Gryphons invite the public to an evening of fun and entertainment Aug. 12, 6:30 p.m. at Cornwall Town Hall in celebration of its 30th birthday. A lively event is promised for young and old alike.

It will include jugglers and stilt-walkers from Matica Circus, music from Sirius Coyote and Going Green. The Brazilian Capoeira Dancers will perform and Vanessa Roe, of Paprika Music in New York City, will sing in Creole with children from the Gryphons’ theater camps.

A performance of “La Sirene: A Haitian Folktale written by Leslie Elias about the reforestation of Haiti and the mythical spirits who help in this process will be performed by the 2010 camp children.

Campers come from all over the Northwest Corner; there are also Haitian children from Waterbury. A 12-person giant oil spill will appear and menace marine life. The Haitian Sea Goddess (La Sirene ) will spirit it away with the help of the audience.

Mystery guests and longtime Gryphon actors will add merriment and magic. Cake and refreshments will be served. For the grand finale, a three-person giant puppet of “The Green Man,â€ made by Tim Prentice and Ellen Moon, will summon all to dance on the Green.

Grumbling Gryphons is a nonprofit organization. The suggested donation is $10. Proceeds will benefit the theater’s annual scholarship program, work in inner city schools and helping Haitian children to find care and housing.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
