Rose Algrant Show: Still fresh and lively, after 51 years

CORNWALL — It’s been around for 51 years and is still going strong: The Rose Algrant Show, an annual exhibit by dozens of local artists, finds its strength in its communal approach, and its loyal contributors.

It is, simply put, a showcase of local talent.

Last year’s landmark half-century anniversary was also a celebration of the founding artists, some of whom still participate.

Among them are Marc and Bee Simont, who arrived at the Aug. 6 opening of this year’s weekend-long show in the Cornwall Consolidated School gym on a perfect summer night. They were greeted by a book-reading bear on the front sidewalk, carved from ice by Zejke Hermann.

Marc Simont can always be counted on for a bit of wit. He commented on his charming color sketch of skiers on Mohawk Mountain (amid gangly pine trees) done in his well-known  style.

“It’s such a Cornwall scene, he said, with a shrug. “You know, the last time I skied was when I was 89. I’ve gotten lazy. I don’t go anymore because I don’t want to put on those heavy boots.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
