Marjorie Ferne M. Hallihan

NORTH CANAAN — Marjorie Ferne (McKusick) Hallihan, 96, died Aug. 2, 2010, at her home at Geer Village. She was the widow of William Hallihan.

Marjorie was born July 31, 1914, in Parkman, Maine, daughter of the late Clair and N. Faye Loring McKusick. She was educated in the one-room school house in Parkman and graduated from The Gilbert School in Winsted, in 1932. She attended Bay Path Institute in Springfield, Mass.

Marjorie worked at the Connecticut Power Company in North Canaan, and as clerk of the Probate Court in North Canaan.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and was an avid fan of the University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team. She was a devoted mother.

Marjorie is survived by a son, John Hallihan of North Canaan, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Wayne McKusick.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 pm. at the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 6, at the North Canaan Congregational Church on Lower Road. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SVNA Hospice, 30 Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068, or to Geer Village, 77 S. Canaan Road, North Canaan, CT 06018.

Water main cleaning in North Canaan

Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
