Quick approval for school roof funding

SHARON — Sixteen voters at a town meeting on July 30 quickly approved plans to fund a replacement for a portion of the aging roof at Sharon Center School.

The meeting lasted only six minutes. No objections to the plan were raised. The two items on the agenda were approved unanimously.

The section of the roof to be replaced is over the gymnasium. New flashing and gutters will also be installed.

The town meeting vote authorized the town to borrow up to $250,000 from Salisbury Bank and Trust for five years at an interest rate of 2.95 percent to fund the roof replacement.

Board of Finance Chairman Barbara Prindle said the expenditure is expected to increase the town’s mill rate (which sets property taxes for Sharon residents). It is too early to say what the increase will be, though.

At the meeting, voters also authorized the Board of Education to spend $58,000 from the Capital for Nonrecurring line item in its budget for the roof project.

No time estimates were given on when the project will begin.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
