Rec director to step down

PINE PLAINS — The Town Board accepted, with reluctance,  the resignation of Recreation Director Jennifer Chase at its June 17 meeting, effective at the end of July.

“It’s too bad because we hate to lose her, said Supervisor Gregg Pulver last week. “She did a phenomenal job and really brought a lot of organizational skills to the job. The binder she created, with all the information related to the recreation programs, will serve the town for many years to come.

Chase has held the position for nearly two years. She said family obligations, including having her second baby, have to take priority.

“I’ve absolutely loved being the rec director, she said last week during a telephone interview, “and I’m really happy to have had the opportunity.

Chase said the Town Board and the community have been incredibly supportive of the recreation department and its activities, and that she will definitely be involved in the town’s search for a replacement.

Chase will continue to run the town’s summer camp, and with last week’s inaugural Stissing Sprint triathlon being a success she’ll still be quite visible in Pine Plains, just in a diminished capacity.

“I just feel like it’s been great, she said, “and I hope someday that it will come back around and I’ll be able to do it again.

“We’ve already received a couple letters of interest, Pulver said. “But whoever steps in has some big shoes to fill. Jen just brought a lot of energy to the job and I can’t say enough about all her hard work.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
