Town extends deal with fire company

FALLS VILLAGE — The Board of Selectmen voted to extend by 10 years the town’s agreement with the Volunteer Fire Department regarding the site of a new firehouse. The decision was made at the regular monthly selectmen’s meeting Monday, June 14.

The agreement between the town and the fire department, from 2002, turned the property on Route 7 over to the fire department with a requirement that the firehouse be completed by October of this year.

The agreement contains language allowing for an extension.

The fire department is waiting on a 2004 state grant reimbursement of $250,000. First Selectman Pat Mechare has been trying to get the paperwork through the state Department of Public Safety (DPS), but said progress has been maddeningly slow;  ordinary red tape problems were exacerbated when the agency employee responsible for the project retired.

Mechare said she made a new contact at DPS in November 2009, who went searching for the paperwork and found the unopened envelope sitting in a pile of other materials in an out-of-the-way spot.

Then, in April of this year, DPS decided it needed additional information — which Mechare supplied.

In the meantime, the fire department plans a capital campaign this summer.

The extension of the agreement must go to town meeting. Mechare said the selectmen will probably set a date at the regular selectmen’s meeting in July.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
