State Line Pizza is new and improved in new location

NORTH CANAAN — “Worth the wait,� is how State Line Pizza customers are describing the newly opened restaurant.

The old State Line, about a quarter mile north on Route 7A, closed at the end of March. Owner Chris Christodoulou hoped to reopen two weeks later in a newly built restaurant at the intersection of Route 7 and North Elm Street.

But delays (primarily, problems getting the electricity hooked up) put the restaurant six weeks behind schedule.

The large and tastefully decorated new dining room, with amber-colored pendant lighting, has been mobbed since opening day. There is plenty of parking.

Divided off at one end is a full bar with two televisions.

Christodoulou said he is happy with the acoustics, an important consideration for dining comfort.

High, padded booths and wooden dividers keep bar noises and conversations from drifting. The new and more efficient kitchen allows for an expanded menu that will include some signature dishes, fresh seafood and daily specials.

A “quiet� opening — meaning in this case letting word-of-mouth replace advertising — has allowed the restaurant owner and staff to take things one step at a time and make adjustments as they go along.

It also means Christodoulou has changed his mind about establishing a party room in an adjoining space. Instead, he now says he will look for a tenant, and is hoping to give a local business an opportunity with a good location and reasonable rent.

Above all, Christodoulou said he has no pretensions about being anything more than a great pizza restaurant.

“State Line Pizza was here before I was. It’s been about 10 years. And it will be here when I’m gone. It belongs to Canaan and it should always stay the local pizza place. I want people to be able to come as they are, relax and enjoy themselves over good food.�

His secret to success: never cutting corners when it comes to food. That means using quality ingredients and always looking for ways to improve.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
