KCS says goodbye to 29 at graduation

KENT — It was a thrilling day for the 29 students who graduated in Kent Center School’s  82nd graduation ceremony, on Monday, June 14.

More than 200 friends and family members cheered the students on as they said goodbye to elementary school and happily received their diplomas.

Student Gina DiGiacomo was a student essayist at the event, and even though she is young, she spoke nostalgically of her past.

“As I listened to my father read off spelling words to my brother, I started to reminisce about how easy it was back in first grade, Gina said. “Snack time, naps and, best of all, recess. The school day was easy, and the homework was easier. It was like being in a hallway made out of stuffing and foam.

“Now everything has changed. Sharp corners filled the spaces around me and the floor kept slipping beneath my feet.

Gina said she wondered how the class of 2010 will be remembered by future generations.

“I looked in a math textbook, at all the names scrawled on the inside cover, Gina said. One girl was described as “the bee’s knees, another student was “a loser.

“And finally, at the end of the row was my name, which was untouched and unblemished. Looking at this list made me think, how will I be remembered at this school?

Before he gave out an award, first selectman and retired school teacher Bruce Adams said that 10 students in the graduating class are children of some of his former students.

“I think that’s a nice commentary on the school, Adams said. “Ten families chose to stay here or returned here to raise their families.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
