75 years ago — June 1935

LAKEVILLE — Ray Dufour in his capacity of traffic cop went on duty at the post office corner on Monday. His presence there will be a great preventive against carelessness, reckless driving or speeding.

Reflections of the Season (editorial): The present political and economic situation of the county is just as clear as mud.

ORE HILL — Julius Franks is enjoying a nine day vacation from his duties at the Borden Co. in Canaan.

LAKEVILLE — Leonard Godwin has moved from the Beehive building to Salisbury.

Two young men operating an airplane were driven down to a forced landing last Friday at Joseph Parsons’ place near Lond Pond. The sudden breaking of a hard thunder storm with hail made navigation impossible. They made the landing safely.

   After the storm when they “took offâ€� they failed to clear an apple tree and crashed. Fortunately neither of the pilots were injured, but the plane was somewhat damaged, and had to be taken apart and trucked away for repairs.

50 years ago — June 1960

SALISBURY — Philip Bishop, Louis Arnoff, and William G. Raynsford were at Ocean Beach Park, New London, on Saturday attending the Sphinx Temple Shrine Ceremonial.

SALISBURY — Susette Terhune, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney H. Terhune, received an Associate in Science Degree at the commencement exercises at Bay Path Junior College on June 5. Miss Terhune, who majored in the executive secretarial course, was a Dean’s list student and president of the senior class.

CANAAN — Miss Marianna Hardenburgh has been confined to her home on Granite Avenue with a fractured bone in her foot.

25 years ago — June 1985

LAKEVILLE — Last Thursday, a familiar name was punched in and out on The Lakeville Journal time clock for the last time. After nearly 37 years as a pressman at The Journal, Kenneth Weir has retired. Mr. Weir joined the newspaper in 1948, when he was hired by former publisher Stewart Hoskins.

Northwest Video, Canaan’s first video film rental outlet, changed ownership Friday when James Frasca sold the business to two attorneys, James Stedronsky of Norfolk and Mark Capecelatro of Lakeville.

Robert J. Pallone

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
