Frederick North Moore

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Frederick North Moore, 60, formerly of Winsted, died at his home on May 30, 2010.

Born in Winsted April 20, 1950, he was the second son of Shirley (Kolega) and Rujo Moore of Winsted.

He was a graduate of The Gilbert School and the University of Connecticut, with a major in music education. After college, he taught in East Lyme, Falls Village and Winsted. He later worked at Danfield Thread, Barber Threads and Coats North America, after which he retired to New York City after working in Mexico.

He was an avid bridge player and spent many hours playing piano, clarinet and saxophone, as well as visiting art and history museums in the city.

Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Susan Belle-Isle of Winsted, Cynthia Levine and her husband, Daniel, of Mansfield, Ga., and Claudia Helm and her husband, James, of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Mary Moore; one nephew, Marcus Moore and his wife, Heather, of Adams, Mass.; and two nieces, Tiffany Moore Wynn and her husband, James, of Galloway, Ohio, and Abigail Helm of Bellevue, Wash. He was predeceased by his brother, Eugene; and a brother-in-law, Dennis Belle-Isle.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 5, 3 p.m., at the Church of Christ, Winsted, with the Rev. Douglas Alderich officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
