Honor Society inducts 17

FALLS VILLAGE — The ceremony to honor National Honor Society inductees at Housatonic Valley Regional High School was held Thursday, May 27, in the Burgess Auditorium.  In addition to the members of the junior class who were honored, seniors who had already been inducted were also honored.

Warren Prindle, the popular art teacher at the high school, gave the address.

Speaking about the explosion in communications technologies, he said, “You are the digital natives,� and warned that “You can use your words to heal — or to bring down.

“When using a machine to communicate, choose your words carefully, guided by your heart.�

In addition to being chosen as the speaker for the ceremony, Prindle was also selected as an honorary National Honor Society member.

“Our faculty votes to honor a teacher exemplifying scholarship, service, character and leadership,� said Housatonic Principal Gretchen Foster.

“As in years past, this year’s recipient provides unending enthusiasm and dedication to our Housatonic community.

“He is a peacemaker, offering positive suggestions to students, faculty and administration for our students to succeed academically, socially and civically. He volunteers for numerous committees and works to improve the entire school environment. The list of accomplishments in his seven years at Housatonic has been outstanding.�

Of the awards, Foster said,  “Our students are educated by some of the finest educators in our state and in our nation. We know we are in great hands because these students will be leading us to a very bright future.â€�

Student Cornelia Smith, speaking of her plans to be an educator, said, “A scholar is a searcher and takes risks. A scholar looks for the next interesting idea.

“Question, listen, speak your mind and challenge.�

Students in the senior class were inducted this spring and last fall: Steven Bartomioli  (2009 fall inductee), Sabina Busby, Rachel Freund, Brittany Godburn  (2009 fall inductee), Elizabeth Greco, Leo Gustafson (2009 fall inductee), Brook Ann Kallstrom, Amanda Lindquist, Mary Perotti, Tahlia Prindle, Christina Purcell (2009 fall inductee), Matthew Rogers (2009 fall inductee), Rebecca Sawicki (2009 fall inductee), Amanda Spelbos (2009 fall inductee), Erin Studer  (2009 fall inductee), Cornelia Smith  (2009 fall inductee) and Kimberly Wheeler.

National Honor Society juniors are Camilla Busby, Ben Finkelstein, Andrew Hoffmann, Morgan Lamb, Ryan Long, Molly Lovejoy, Samantha McKenzie, Hunter Nelson, Emma Olowinia, Rebecca Rybczyk, Emily Studer and Genevieve Terrall.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
