Alternate routes to Music Mountain

FALLS VILLAGE — The state Department of Transportation, for the second successive year, is closing the Route 7 bridge  across the Housatonic River between Falls Village and Lime Rock on the opening weekend at Music Mountain in Falls Village.

The bridge, which is undergoing extensive repairs, will be closed the weekend of June 12-13 and again June 19-20.

If you are coming to Music Mountain from the west on Route 112,  turn left onto Dugway Road at Lime Rock’s Trinity Episcopal Church, across the road from the Lime Rock Park racetrack. This will  take you into Falls Village and a short drive to Music Mountain. There will be signs directing motorists to the facility.

For drivers coming from the south on Route 7,  go right on the covered bridge at West Cornwall and continue on to the Cornwall Consolidated School at Cream Hill Road. Turn left.  This road dead ends at Music Mountain Road. Turn right  and go about 2 miles to Music Mountain.

If you miss the West Cornwall turnoff, just continue up Route 7 to the junction with Route 112. Bear left on 112 and proceed  to Trinity Episcopal Church (see instructions above).

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
