'Something for everyone' at new consignment shop

PINE PLAINS — Jessica Quinn got help from friends and family when she needed to stock her new store, the consignment shop near the intersection in town.

“It was great, Quinn said. “I needed inventory and everyone was very good about helping me out. [The donated clothes] made up the inventory I started out with.

Quinn’s Closet offers “consignments and more, according to the owner. There’s plenty of what you’d expect from a consignment shop, and then a little more with everything from household hardware to jewelry to children’s toys to books and movies.

“I wanted to have something for everyone, she said. “I love tag sale-ing and thrift stores and the idea was that there would be something here for everybody.

And from casual clothes to formal wear (a sign on the door last week advertised prom dresses just in time for Stissing Mountain High School’s prom), there isn’t much consignment that isn’t accepted.

“I’m willing to take anything, Quinn said. “You never know what people will be looking for, so I have a variety of things here and I also have the option of selling on eBay.

The online marketplace was where Quinn’s business first started out, but she said she was drawn to the idea of operating her own consignment shop.

“Thrift stores are great, but there are already a couple here [in Pine Plains], she said. “I wanted to have something a little different.

The local shop owners have welcomed Quinn’s Closet into the community, and Quinn said that it’s all about pointing out to customers that Pine Plains is a great place to shop.

“We need to get a little more business in here and build up Pine Plains a bit, she said. “We just have to spread the word.

Quinn’s Closet is at 2976 East Church St., next to the main intersection in town. The store is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The shop telephone number is 518-398-0037.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
