Clowning around at Dutchess Day School

MILLBROOK — A family carnival came to Millbrook Saturday, May 22. Everyone was invited to Dutchess Day School to ride ponies, race the roaming African turtle, slide and bounce and eat cotton candy.

Under the big top school gymnasium the students of Dutchess Day, who had been practicing all week with Cirque du Jour instructors, turned into spangled jugglers, painted clowns, feather balancers, plate spinners and dangling trapeze artists. All of the students were involved, from the kindergartners who opened the show under the watchful eye of Headmaster John Cissel to the accomplished eighth-grade stilt walkers. The audience was filled with parents equipped with video cameras and large telephoto lenses.

Parent volunteers roamed the fair selling cotton candy, many saying it’s OK one day a year.  Noah Blake, the father of a third-grader and a sixth-grader, whose daughter performed on the trapeze, was selling raffle tickets to benefit the scholarship fund. The free circus event was sponsored by Dutchess Day School Parents Association to recognize parents and students and invite the community to the school. Cat Kennan, outgoing president of the Parents Association, said the circus was meant “to be a simple, old-fashioned celebration for everyone.â€

Backstage, Cirque du Jour’s master of ceremonies, Bucky the Clown, aka Chris Allison, said things were going swimmingly.

“Cirque du Jour is delighted to be back in Millbrook with great kids and a beautiful landscape, he said. “It’s one of our favorite schools.

Chris and his wife, Gigi, both hold BFAs, Bachelor of Fun degrees, from the Barnum and Bailey Clown College and worked for a decade at the Ringling Brothers’ Circus before starting their own traveling program to bring circus skills, fun and performance confidence into schools.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
