75 years ago — May 1935

SALISBURY — The noted author, Albert Payson Terhune, and Mrs. Terhune, of Pompton Lakes, N.J., were luncheon guests at White Hart Inn on Tuesday.

SALISBURY — George Ostrom was the victim of a painful accident last Saturday evening. He was up on a ladder at the Salisbury Pharmacy engaged in removing some storm windows. Losing his balance he fell to the ground striking on his heels. The bones in both heels were fractured and one wrist quite badly sprained. He was taken to Sharon Hospital where his injuries were treated. He was able to be brought home on Tuesday, but will be unable to step on the injured feet for some time.

50 years ago — May 1960

SALISBURY — John C. Percy, with Mrs. Percy and their daughter, Sally Simons, attended his 60th class Reunion at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J., on May 21.

Richard R. Miller of Lakeville was recently given a patent, the sixth granted on his invention, the Raytector. This machine was originally patented in 1950, and is a radio pulse echo device with an alarm activated by selected echoes to be used in conjunction with radar systems aboard ships. The patent recently received is for a basic improvement in the instrument to prevent other radar sets in the area from creating an interference, which would set off the alarm system of the Raytector.

SALISBURY — Miss Harriette Harrison returned home last week after a most enjoyable five months’ trip abroad.

CANAAN —  Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D’Amato, pharmacists at Kauttu’s, have moved into the May house on the East Canaan Road.

25 years ago — May 1985

SALISBURY — The old schoolhouse in Mount Riga village in which generations of children of ironworkers, charcoal cutters and subsistence farmers in the last century learned their ABCs was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon. Owned and used by Polly McCabe Barvoets as a summer cottage, the structure was being readied for use last weekend. Gas pilot lights for the stove, refrigerator and hot water heater had been turned on only half an hour before the laundry room, where the tanks were stored, became engulfed in flames.

Water main cleaning in North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN – Aquarion Water Company today announced a water main cleaning project in the company’s North Canaan system. Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
