Doris L. Barber

WINSTED — Doris L. Barber, 84, died May 15, 2010, at Valerie Manor in Torrington. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Anthony Barber Sr.

Born in St. Genevieve, Mo., on Sept. 25, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Lottie Leola (Resinger) and Preston William Burgess.

She had moved to Winsted in 1945, where she lived most of her life. Prior to her retirement in 1989, she was employed at the Union Pin Co. for 15 years.

Doris loved to sew. She made quilts for friends and family and won many ribbons and prizes at local and state fairs. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her brother, William Burgess of Troy, Ill., she is survived by her children, Charlotte (Barber) Poley and her husband, Robert, of Winsted, Anthony Barber Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Chesapeake, Va., and Keith Barber of Winsted; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Doris was predeceased by a sister, Shirley (Burgess) Clim; and three brothers, Ronald Burgess, James Burgess and Glen Burgess.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 21, at noon at Maloney Funeral Home, Winsted. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s New Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, May 21, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
