Juliet (Kindlund) Aller

LAKEVILLE — Juliet (Kindlund) Aller, 95, a longtime resident of Lakeville, died peacefully at her home on May 11, 2010, with her son and daughter by her side. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, at the Salisbury Congregational Church.

Julie was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Staten Island, N.Y., to Althea (Brodie) and Martin Gustav Kindlund. Upon completion of studies at Gardner College in New York City, she married Howard Lewis Aller Jr. of Lakeville, whose career in the transportation industry (Pan American-Grace Airways and the Johnson Line of Stockholm, Sweden) launched a life of almost 30 years abroad.

Married on the high seas off the the coast of Chile, her residencies included Valparaiso, Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta and Santiago in Chile; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Peru;Yokohama, Japan and Antigua Guatemala.

Upon her return to Lake-ville, she became passionately involved in community affairs, serving on the boards of Sharon Hospital, the Salisbury Public Health Nursing Association, the Housatonic Day Care Center, the Salisbury Chapter of the American Red Cross (under whose auspices she faithfully served for 20 years as a volunteer nurse’s aide at Sharon Hospital).

Foremost among her commitments was her tireless support of the life of the Salisbury Congregational Church, serving on its Board of Deacons, the Upkeep Society and its Board of Trustees. Her enlistment of male members of the church’s choir to entertain the congregation at the finale of a progressive dinner event in the mid-1980s gave birth to the HousaTonics Barbershop Chorus.

To many she represented the warmth of home hospitality, compassion, the friendliness of a life rich with experiences, the sympathy of someone who understood wisely and widely, the delightful vagueness of when mealtimes should be (her life in Latin America?), the unity of family, the humor that should always help one appreciate life, the gentleness of real motherhood, which reaches beyond immediate family, and an outlook on life that was always positive.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally Martin (Aller) Martí and her husband, José Luis Martí, of Lawrenceville, N.J.; a son, Howard “Chico Aller of Lakeville; a son-in-law, Wallace Blythyn Reynolds of Chestertown, Md.; eight grandchildren, Carrie and Sarah Aller and their mother, Mary Crittenden, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Anna Martin Hughes of Washington, D.C., and her mother, Susan Hughes, of Longmont, Colo., Andrew Reynolds of Jackson, Wyo., Victoria Reynolds of Portland, Ore., Gabriela Martí of Madrid, Spain, and Alejandro and Nicolás Martí of Brooklyn; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson Crittenden and Caroline Condie Aller-Cohen of Brooklyn.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Condie Aller Reynolds; and a sister, Althea Kindlund Canfield.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
