Action Wildlife: Up close and animal

A recent trip to the Action Wildlife Foundation in Goshen offered interesting information on animals ranging from the American bison to Japanese sika deer, miniature horses, nilgai, llama and fainting goats, among many others. The visit also gave us a chance to see the foundation’s newly built Museum and Exploration Center, which features an array of stuffed animals from Action Wildlife owner Jim Mazzarelli’s days as a hunter. A giant rhinoceros in the center of the building is an impressive focal point, along with a new waterfall, bears, felines and hoofed creatures. There is also a live reptile center, iguana habitat and petting zoo on the premises.

The live creatures on the 116-acre grounds at Action Wildlife are impressive and sometimes seem larger than life. Goats, horses, Scottish Highland cattle and even a zebra will walk up to visitors to say hello. It’s an opportunity to get up close and personal with an array of large, furry friends.

A new drive-through safari was probably the least impressive component of the outdoor zoo, as the animals were few and far between. But the rest of the visit made for an entertaining and educational afternoon.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
